Thinking Positive Doesn’t Always Work

By Teresa Salhi 27 Comments

Have you ever noticed  how your goal of thinking positive doesn't always seem to work?

Do you ever you want something so bad that it hurts?  Like it's somehow impossible for you to have? And as time goes by  you start thinking that you're not doing enough or you're not worthy of this thing that you see so many others enjoying.

Oh, it can get so frustrating and can put you in a tailspin of negative thoughts and feelings.  Before you know it, one negative thought leads to another as it takes you in a downward spiral of more and more feelings of inadequacy. Why is thinking positive so hard?

Thinking Positive

Or, maybe you do trust that you can have all those big dreams and heart desires; the love, the job, the friends, the fun and you really do believe the Universe is on your side!  Yet, sometimes you catch yourself monitoring every thought – even getting a little obsessive with trying to keep them positive when it seems as if it's taking so long to get your dreams out of your head and into your physical life.  Know what I mean?

You start to doubt this thinking positive thing. You keep track of time and compare yourself to others which often creates more doubt.

You begin to doubt if you're doing all the right actions. You question your confidence.  You get confused at whether you're listening more to your intuition and divine guidance or just overthinking and following what society says you must do, or must be or have to believe or whatever….ugh.

Yep, I know, been there.

When I fall into this mode, I remember that I must, must let it go!  Easier said than done. This is why I chose "letting go" as my yearly theme.  My intention is to practice it more and more- the letting go part.  To put a conscious spotlight on what I need to let go of which generally comes down to self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and trusting the outside world more than my inner knowing.

So, I meditate to help me.

I didn't always know how. In the beginning it was weird to say it out loud – "I meditate."  But not any more, I know it works.  It is a practice of clearing my mind of clutter, garbage, negative self-talk and to stop all the craziness going on in my head!

On the road to quietness, I found it helped to get some inner reprogramming.  To HEAR what aligns with my higher self and to ALLOW myself a few moments to cherish and explore my dreams.  For example, I started using guided meditations.  They  helped a great deal!   Hearing the right words that keep me from taking a downward dive into a endless pity party.  But rather to create an expansion of the dreams that I was savoring.

I have complimentary guided meditation to share with you from Meditainment that will inspire and help you to let go and get back in your positive groove! Please listen to this, you'll be glad you did. Maybe even choose to listen to every day – which I highly recommend! This is for you darling! https://www.empowerthedream.com/wp-content/uploads/Blue_Lagoon_Meditation-Meditainment.mp3

Come back and let me know what you think of this – how did it make you feel?

With love,

It’s been especially difficult to stay positive lately with all that’s happening politically. Maybe meditation will help.

Meditation has so many beneficial effects. One of the reasons it’s so effective is the brain moves into slower wave patterns and out of high energy beta waves of thought and communication. It’s like clearing the buffer and allowing a fresh reboot. Keep it up!

Agree with you Teresa, as positive thinking of course isn’t the only factor in staying positive, if that makes sense. Sometimes we do need to remove ourself, through meditation or whatever works for us, to clear the energy and gain new perspective. I’ve found that art works for me. I can go into class in a very uninspired or resistant mood and voila, getting into the process somehow transforms me. Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope to come back to listen to the meditation too!

As I read your article, I kept saying “Yep!” out loud. Staying positive can be easy or hard for me–it depends on the day and what’s going on! Limiting my time spent on Facebook has been a good way to eliminate some of what put me in a negative space. I notice that it’s easier to be positive on sunnier days…clouds, cold, and rain are not my favorite. 😉 “Letting it go” is a terrific theme/mantra and meditation is a smart choice to help accomplish your goal.

Yes, our environment is such a contributor to our emotions and up to us to monitor what works or not. And go for what works just like you mentioned. Great that you are listening to our own needs and taking action Meghan.

OH girl… that is so true… this was especially true with dealing with my oldest.. who has been a whirlwind of issues… and it was always something.. and I’d try to be positive and let it roll off me and then something else would happen… and repeat.. but I’ve come to terms that sometimes life just sucks and bad things DO happen to good people.

This is so needed today, Teresa. Positive thinking is a wonderful thing, but we have to honor all of our emotions. And I know those doubts as well! Mediation works wonderfully for me as well.

This resonates well with me because I sometimes compare my results with others in my field. I know this is not good as it most often icreases the stress and anxiety in me. Thank you for this piece.

Great points, Teresa. Wanting something so much pushes it away sometimes. You are right, we need to release that anxiety, stress, and sometimes all thoughts of the thing itself, and give it the space to come to us!

Yes, what I found that helps is the letting go part and to be ok with where I am right now. To find more to appreciate about now brings me into a better feeling …and thus creating from a positive energy vs a deflated one.

What a beautiful meditation to share, Teresa. It was a lovely way to start the day. I hate when
I start doubting the power of my positive thoughts as that is when they start to lose their power.
